Anyang 2006: Day One
At the end of day 1, Colombia, the USA, and the hosts Korea each have 2 gold medals after a wonderful day of speed skating. Chile, Italy, NZ and Chinese Taipei all got off to a good start to the World Championships with medals as well. The morning session saw the 300m time trial heats in the blazing sun. Most of the skaters who put down good times in the morning also backed it up in the night for the finals with the exception of the Colombian Berenece. Se had an average first round but then blitzed the field in the night time to win the Sr Women's 300m. Kalon Dobin in his aerodynamics suit retained his morning lead to capture gold in the final. Lee of Korea was an obvious crowd favorite when he took out the Jr men 300m and Richardson of the USA took out the Jr Women's 300m. Andrew Finster of Australia was hammering when he lost control, hit the wall and broke both his wrists. You can see his photo in our photo section.

In the 15km elimination, Peñan from Chile took a commanding lead ahead of the two Colombians and held on for the win. In the Jr Men, Korea went 1, 2, which will be aired on TV across the country later tonight. It is also sure to be in all of tomorrows newspapers. In the Senior Women's race, Hyo Sook had an early breakaway as you can see in our video coverage, before being brought back to the pack by the two Colombians. Then then went again a few laps before the finish but slip ed up with a lap and a half to go and and her teammate and Korean star Kwok Chae couldn't hang on to the lead. Holguin of Colombia got around Kwok Chae for the win with Vivas third. There was an early crash in the men's race but no break-a-ways. The Colombians and Italians looked strong all race. With a lap to go Mantia had it all to do in third behind two Colombians. Botero looked like he was setting the win up for Garzon but Mantia passed them both with half a lap to go and blasted away for the win.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the 1000m from 9am local time. Live lap times will be updated every minute on our LIVE web page.
