After
winning the Senior men's 300m
Time Trial last night, Nicole
Begg and Scott Arlidge of NZ have
just won their Senior Men and
Women 10,000m points elimination
races. For such a small team,
they are really dominating this
competition. New Zeland is now
3rd in the medal tally ahead of
the great skating nations of the
USA, Colombia and Italy. The host
nation Korea is leading the medal
tally.
In
the Junior Women's 10,000m points
elimination, Catherine Peñan
added to her gold in the 15km
points last night to win another
gold today. She ripped the field
apart with no-one coming anywhere
near her. In the Junior men's
race, yesterdays winner from
Korea Um blocked the pack while
his teammate Kwak broke away
for the win. In the Senior Ladies
event, Nicole Begg took an early
break-a-way which was a very
risky and calculated move. She
gained points lap after lap
while knowing that she would
get reigned back into the pack
and needed to keep enough energy
in the tank so she did not get
eliminated. If the Korean had
of won the final sprint, she
would have won it, but the Colombian
Holguin who won the elimination
last night piped her at the
line for the line honors which
gave the win to Nicole Begg.
In the men's race, Arlidge did
the same thing as Begg and went
early and amassed points. The
Colombians and Italians chased
but couldn't catch him on points.
With 10 laps to go the New Zealander
had won the race if he can just
not be eliminated. And he did
just that, holding on for the
win. The Korean Nam took line
honors and the silver medal.
Coach Bill Begg said after the
race that these skaters did
all the hard work for years
and thoroughly deserve the wins.
The
1000m finals will follow in
a few minutes time.
