Located in the north of Spain, Gijon
is a tourist and industrial coastal city of the Principality
of Asturias. It is the biggest city in this region with
a population of more than 280,000.
Gijon was traditionally an industrial
town which is why – during the 20th Century -
its population increased and it developed very quickly.
During the time of the iron and steel industry era the
city was forced to change their industries for new touristic
and service-style industry as well as being a new university
center in the north of Spain. Recently, Gijon was consindered
the third best Spanish city for quality-of-life behind
Pamplona and Bilbao.
The city is located in central zone
of the Principality, 26 kilometers from Oviedo City
–the regional capital- forming a big metropolitan
nucleus with near to 1 Million of inhabitants with excellent
transportation and communication networks.
467 kilometers separate Gijon from Madrid,
the national capital. Also from the neighboring area
is possible to travel to Portugal (to 189 km) or to
France (to 306 km).
For the tourist, the city offers many
different options becoming one of the most active cities
in Spain. Colorful beaches, manicured parks and many
historical places well preserved. Also, it is one of
the most important centeres of the peninsulaand has
