Day Five: Shaun’s day

Today we woke to the tragic news that Australian former junior world champion had passed away. Shaun was a fantastic young skater who was loved by all who met him. At the last world championships that he was at he dominated the junior category and was toted by many to be the next superstar of skating. Shaun had a cyst near his lung, which was impeding his breathing. When it was removed it was found to be cancerous. A few months later Shaun was told the terrible news that the cancer was back and growing quickly. As it was so close to his lung it was impossible to operate on. We were told he would not live out 2003 but he was a real fighter and lived on until today. Few skaters come along with such heart. All will dearly miss him. There is a very somber mood here at the world championships. Our thoughts are with Shaun’s family.
